The first nail gun burst of the morning jolted Clara awake, heart hammering against her ribs. She threw off the covers, a sheen of sweat already slicking her skin, and padded over to the window. Across the street, the usually serene craftsman home was a hive of activity. Men in hard hats swarmed, and the air buzzed with the promise of chaos. Clara clenched her jaw, her fingers drumming a restless rhythm against the windowsill. She’d known this was coming – the paperwork had been plastered on the community board for weeks – but still, the sudden disruption felt like a personal affront.

She poured a cup of lukewarm coffee, the smell doing nothing to soothe the tightness in her chest. Each subsequent hammering, each grinding saw-blade, sent a fresh wave of agitation through her. She found herself snapping at the television, muttering under her breath about the audacity of it all. Then, she saw the neighbor's dog running around the yard, and that was the last straw. Clara stormed out of the house, ready to confront the construction crew.
